Dr. Carman Turkelson DNP, RN, CCRN-K, CHSE-A is an Associate Professor of Nursing and the Director of the Center for Simulation & Clinical Innovation in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Turkelson earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a focus on interprofessional education using simulation from the University of Michigan in 2013. She received her Master of Science in Nursing Education from Michigan State University (MSU) in 2008 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing also from MSU in 1993.
Dr. Turkelson has been a nurse for over 30 years and has extensive experience in critical care, management, education, and simulation. Her interest in the use of simulation as a teaching-learning strategy began in 2008 and since that time, she has continued to cultivate her knowledge, skills, and expertise in this teaching/learning pedagogy. Dr. Turkelson has participated in several fellowships including the National League for Nursing Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators, the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), and CAE Healthcare Simulation Fellowship as well as the inaugural INACSL Research Fellowship. She was one of the first Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators (CHSE) from the Society of Simulation in Healthcare and recently achieved the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators-Advanced (CHSE-A) certification demonstrating her commitment to high-quality simulation-based experiences (SBE). Dr. Turkelson’s research explores the use of simulation, aspects of learning, interprofessional teamwork and communication, and patient safety in both acute care and academic settings. In addition, Dr. Turkelson and her colleagues have been the recipients of grant funding supporting the development of innovative SBEs, have multiple peer-reviewed publications, and have presented locally, nationally, and internationally. Most recently she is serving as the PI on a federally funded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) Advanced Nursing Education (ANE) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (ANE-SANE) Program grant. Funding from this grant has served as the impetus for the development of an innovative new certificate program to train SANEs at the University of Michigan Flint. Funding from this grant has also supported the development exploration of the use of multiple SBEs including a unique mixed reality holographic patient experience focusing specifically on the unique training needs of SANE nurses serving in rural or underserved communities.
