Dr. Thomas serves as the Project Director/Principal Investigator for the Regional Underserved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program. In this role she oversees the implementation of the program, is responsible for the ongoing selection of SANE trainees and other program members, and oversees the continuous evaluation of the program, and is responsible for the dissemination of project results through presentations and manuscripts.
Prior to this program, she has worked in a University based center training and provided sexual assault exams with forensic evidence training as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for the University of Florida Child Protection Team. She has completed examinations including forensic evidence collection for victims/survivors of sexual assault, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. In addition, she has served as a qualified expert witness in these areas in Criminal, Civil, and Family court and worked with rural locations to provide services. She is familiar with the successful “on call” strategies which helped ensure the child/adolescent survivors in 16 counties would receive the best holistic care. Coordination of victim support services and active collaboration is familiar to her within the state of Florida. Her collaborations include projects with colleagues trained in Criminology, Forensics, Qualitative Methods, African American Diaspora studies, Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Psychometrics, Instrument Development and Psychology.
