Gavin Smith obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Public Administration and a minor Political Science from the University of Tennessee in 2010. He then obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2013. While in law school, he was a member of the University of Memphis Law Review. After graduating from law school, he joined the Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office as an assistant district attorney, where he has tried over forty jury trials. Gavin has spent the last five years assigned to the Special Victim’s Unit. The Special Victim’s Unit prosecutes cases that involve the physical and sexual abuse of child victims, as well as sexual assaults that involve adult victims.
As a member of the Special Victim’s Unit, Gavin takes part in weekly Child Protection Investigation Team (C.P.I.T.) meetings; these meetings involve a multidisciplinary team review, investigation, and prosecution of child physical and sexual abuse cases in Memphis, Tennessee. He is also the assigned prosecutor for the Shelby County Child Fatality Review Team, which is a multidisciplinary team tasked with investigation and evaluation of deaths of juveniles in Memphis, Tennessee.
